Seeing brown spots? Too much time spent in the sun or daily exposure to sunshine can result in unsightly clusters of melanin (skin’s pigment) showing up on your face, neck, and chest—all areas routinely exposed to UV light. While we love spots on dalmatians, many consider these harmless brown spots on skin unattractive. If you happen to agree, here are three simple steps you can take to get rid of brown spots:

  1. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Retinol and Hydroquinone

MDLighteningCremeBelieve it or not, there are very efficient ingredients out there that can help diminish the look of brown spots, including two favorites: Retinol and Hydroquinone. Products with Retinol help reduce the appearance of brown spots by dispersing Melanin granules. Hydroquinone, on the other hand, works as a skin bleach to temporarily bleach the skin and in so doing, diminish the look of the brown spots. f you are looking to get rid of your brown spots by using a product at home, we highly recommend that you use one that combines both Retinol and Hydroquinone in one, like Image’s MD Reconstructive Lightening Creme ($57). As with all products containing Retinol, you’ll want to use this creme at night only and be sure to use sunscreen during the day, since Retinol will make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

  1. Intense Pulsed Light Treatments (IPL’s)

IPL’s or “Photofacials”can safely and effectively treat a wide range of facial concerns, such as: Facial redness and rosacea, broken capillaries; benign brown pigment; sun spots; and uneven skin tones. Although this treatment will require an hour of your time and a visit to see your favorite esthetician or skin care specialist (aka- US!), one treatment of IPL can do wonders for your skin! However, beware that those with sun damaged skin may need more than just one IPL treatment to see optimal results, depending on the level of damage on the skin.

  1. Sunblock, Sunblock, Sunblock

We hate to say it, but all the products and treatments in the world won’t keep the brown spots away if you don’t protect your skin from the sun! You’ve heard it a million times before, we know, but make sure you wear sunblock to protect your skin from future brown spots.
