Week 4: TREAT YOURSELF
By now we have taught you how to tackle breakouts, build your skincare routine, and the importance of protecting your skin from harsh weather conditions. For the final week of our 30 Days to Your Best Skin Yet plan, we will focus on something everyone should do: Treating Yourself. Just as protecting and treating your skin is important, pampering your skin the right way is the last step on the journey to gorgeous skin.
DAY 22: STEAM
A good steam will cause your skin to perspire and give it a deep clean as it lifts dirt, dead skin cells, and other debris trapped in the pores. And while a steam room is easy to find these days, you can always steam in the comfort of your home. All you need is:
• A nice big bowl
• 2 TB of your favorite fragrant herb like chamomile, rose, lavender.. or a few tea bags of herbal tea
• A few drops of your favorite essential oil
• A big towel
Fill the bowl 3/4 of the way to the top with very hot water. Add your herbs and oils and get comfy somewhere, before putting your face over the steaming herbal tea. Put your hair up and then put the towel over your head to create a tent that traps in all that glorious fragrance and cleansing steam. Leave a small opening for air flow, and steam your face for at least 10 minutes. Your pores will open and release toxins, oils, and bacteria, allowing the nourishing plant oil vapor to penetrate and cleanse your skin.
DAY 23: EXFOLIATE
Exfoliating makes your skin look and feel better by removing dirt and dead skin cells from the surface, getting rid of the “flakes” that are so prevalent during the Fall and Winter months. Simply apply a scrub to your fingers and massage into your skin in a circular motion, focusing on blackheads and dry skin areas. Don’t scrub too hard, or else you’ll aggravate acne and oil production. On that note, make sure you’re using a proper scrub that won’t irritate skin. We love Image Skincare Iluma Intense Brightening Exfoliating Powder ($29.90), an ultrasoft micro-exfoliating powder combined with botanical brighteners that buffs away dead skin cells leaving skin smooth and illuminated without any redness or irritation.
DAY 24: INDULGE IN A FACIAL
Applying a moisturizing mask on clean skin is one of the best ways to nourish dull, dry skin. We recommend Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Enzyme Masque ($31), a gently exfoliating masque infused with Vitam C to slough away dry skin while simultaneously injecting skin with essential antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Simply apply liberally to cleansed skin for 5-30 minutes 1-3 times per week and watch your skin become radiant and youthful.
DAY 25: GET YOUR MIST ON
In the chilly months ahead, transitioning from the cold air to the heat indoors causes dryness to wreak havoc. To help combat that, try a hydrating mist to give skin buoyancy. We’re big fans of Lexli’s Tone and Balance, a gentle toner that contains natural, moisturizing humectants to add moisture without causing surface dryness. This unique formulation also restores the skin’s natural pH, removes any last traces of cleanser and debris, and is great as a light body moisturizer.
DAY 26: SOOTHE IRRITATED SKIN
There are a ton of sources where irritation can come from, such as excessive drynesss or too much sun. Whatever the cause, a good moisturizer should be a fast fix for redness. Make sure you read the ingredients and avoid anything containing alcohol and fragrances, which tends to exacerbate the problem. A great moisturizer that you can use either day or night is Image Skincare Ormedic Balancing Bio-Peptide Creme ($61), an organic and light weight cream blended with japenese green tea, aloe vera, chamomile, and grade seed to restore and balance skin.
DAY 27: HAVE A TEA PARTY FOR YOUR SKIN
Your skin can benefit from tea’s antioxidants just as your body does. So once a week, soak a cloth in chilled green tea and place it on your face to absorb all the good for you antioxidants and help fight off free radicals. Need an extra bonus? The caffeine in the green tea will constrict blood vessels and de-puff your skin!
DAY 28: EAT YOUR WAY TO GORGEOUS SKIN
Want plumper, softer and smoother skin? Omega-3 fatty acids are your best bet and can be found in almonds, salmon, herring, and trout. These fatty acids have also been reported to reinforce cell membranes, which hold in water and therefore allow your skin to hold on to moisture.
DAY 29: DON’T ONLY FOCUS ON YOUR FACE
While the skin your face may be the one on display, your neck, chest, and hands get as much exposure to the environment as your face, yet are often overlooked in skin care. So as you continue on with your skincare routine, squeeze out a little extra of each product and extend it dow to your neck and chest, and finish by rubbing the remainder into your hands.
DAY 30: MASSAGE SKINCARE PRODUCTS IN
Massaging skincare products into the skin helps increase circulation and flush out toxins. To experience the benefits of daily massage, make sure to focus on areas that show active lines and wrinkles, like between the brows, crows feet, forehead, and on the creases around the mouth.
