It’s hard to believe there is only a month left this year. Summer is a memory, and Christmas is fast approaching.
While the holiday season can be filled with great joy, it can also be hectic – and stress-inducing. The effects of stress on the body are well known, ranging from making you more likely to snap at your spouse to enticing you to indulge in that second slice of red velvet cheesecake. Therefore, it’s important to schedule in a little “me-time” during the busy holiday season to keep the stress monster at bay.
1: Plan in advance
Early in the season, make a list of what you absolutely need to accomplish this holiday season, and when you’d like to have those tasks completed. Then, add in a few “nice to do” items – while being realistic. Sure, your nephew would love a hand-sewn stocking that’s as tall as he is, but is that a realistic addition to an already tight schedule?
2: Keep up healthy routines
Maybe you go to the gym three times a week, or maybe you have a Thursday night Zumba class. Don’t let December’s busy schedule serve as an excuse to skip out of your usual healthy routine. Tell yourself that no matter how busy you get, these commitments to yourself are non-negotiable. Treat them like brushing your teeth.
3: Ditch perfectionism
At some point, “good enough” will simply have to do. It’s not realistic to expect to pull off a perfectly decorated house, a perfect meal, and the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Ask yourself, “How much will these details matter 10 years from now?” Chances are, not nearly as much as the perfectionist mind may imagine.
4: Be present in the moment
Take the time to enjoy the little moments this season. Really savour the taste and texture of a glass of red wine. Focus on each and every bite of that holiday treat. Stop and gaze quietly at a lit Christmas tree. Whatever this holiday season holds, it won’t be like this forever. For better or for worse, things will change – savour the now, as time is marching on.
5. Take time to pamper yourself
Spas and salons book up quickly near the holidays, and we’re no exception. Schedule that well-deserved massage, facial, or pedicure to leave yourself looking your best. An hour or two to relax and rejuvenate can have a significant impact on your stress levels, leaving you revitalized and ready to enjoy the holiday season.
