Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are that you’ve heard the term exfoliation before. But why exfoliate? It’s pretty simple, really: If you want healthy, glowing skin, regular exfoliation is a MUST, in addition to, of course, cleansing, moisturizing, and slathering on sunscreen.
WHAT & HOW
To exfoliate the skin simply means to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface by the use of certain exfoliating products or by getting exfoliating treatments. As such, you can easily exfoliate at home by using exfoliating products. We recommend any of Image’s MD line products or Ageless products, both of which we carry here at Barris.
If, on the other hand, you’re looking to get an exfoliating treatment here at Barris, you can do so by getting Facials, Microderms, and/or Chemical Peels. Those with especially dull skin would benefit from a series of 6 of any of these treatments, and it is recommended that they do one treatment every two weeks. And the great thing about buying a series of treatments here at Barris is that when you buy a series of 5 treatments, you get the sixth one for free!
WHY
If you’re considering adding an exfoliating element to your skincare routine, then surely you should know why it’s so important. Turns out that another great side effect of getting older (you know, in addition to gravity taking its toll) is slower cell regeneration, which means that with age it gets harder to shed skin cells and regenerate new ones. As you can imagine, a pile of old skin cells on the surface of the skin results in dull, rough, and dry skin, not to mention the resulting excess oil and clogged pores that builds up as a consequence of it, leaving skin prone to acne and blemishes. Proper exfoliation done twice a week removes this barrier of dead skin cells and uncovers fresh, new cells below. The end result? fresh and healthy looking skin that is ready to absorb all the good products you put on it.
But beware, and exfoliate based on your skin’s needs and skin type, since over-exfoliating can leave skin dry, irritated, and damaged. If you don’t know your skin type and need help introducing exfoliation to your skincare routine, talk to one of our estheticians. We’ll be more than happy to recommend a personalized skincare program for you.
