If you follow the latest in skin care trends, you’re probably aware of the popular professional procedure that promises to leave the skin silky smooth and glowing by removing dead skin cells AND unwanted facial hair (so long, peach fuzz). This treatment is offered at skin care clinics and doctors’ offices, and we are excited that is now being offered at Barris Laser & Skincare.
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a safe, painless, and highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair (aka peach fuzz). At Barris Laser & Skincare, the procedure is 45 minutes to an hour. It starts with cleansing and prepping the skin to a dry surface. The blade removes vellus hair and dead skin very quickly using quick upward strokes. The treatment follows the jawline, chin, upper lip, cheeks, sideburn area, the neck under your jawline, nose and forehead. To calm and nourish your fresh new complexion, a hydrating masque is applied followed by a moisturizer and SPF.
How does dermaplaning work?
Dermaplaning prompts cellular turnover that targets skin texture (softens) and tone (brightens). There are immediate results and longterm benefits. It immediately removes fine hairs, and exfoliates the top-most layer of dead skin. It naturally stimulates blood circulation giving you a beautiful rosy, radiant glow! Expect some light redness following the treatment (a few hours tops!), but the rosy glow continues for days beyond! Skin tone is instantly brighter and balanced. Skin texture is dramatically and instantly softened. Longterm benefits of regular dermaplaning include better penetration of products, smoother makeup application, fewer wrinkles, reduction of acne scarring, and reduction of hyperpigmentation. Regular dermaplaning helps maintain those immediate results longterm.
What skin types benefit from dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is effective on every skin type, with the exception of skin with active inflamed acne. In that case, book an appointment for our Acne Facial and get just as fabulous results! Those with dry or rough skin texture especially benefit from dermaplaning as it helps to minimize superficial acne scarring or uneven skin tone. Dry, sensitive, normal, oily, combination, acne prone (when no inflammation or active acne present), even rosacea prone can all benefit from this treatment. It is greatly beneficial for mature skin, which tends to have a buildup of dead cells. Cellular turnover slows down as we age. Dermaplaning is safe for pregnant or lactating clients who cannot have chemical peels (peels penetrate skin to act at the cellular level, thus are contraindicated).
Will dermaplaning cause the hair on my face to grow back thicker?
False! Although merely an old wives’ tale, many patients are often concerned that the hair will grow back heavier and darker after dermaplaning. This is not the case. As long as the hair is superficial vellus hair, it will grow back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment; although some patients experience a slowed growth rate and report softer hair texture.
How often should I get dermaplaning done?
For the best results, once a month or every 4 weeks is recommended. Continued monthly treatments will visibly reduce scarring, fine lines and pigmentation; however, vellus hair may grow back slower after each treatment. You may not notice enough hair growth to return in 4 weeks. Schedule a dermaplaning whenever your vellus hair length is driving you crazy!
Pairing Treatments
Dermaplaning is an amazing treatment on its own, and you can combine it with other procedures, too! Removing the outmost layer of the epidermis can make treatments such as Facials and Microneedling more effective. By pairing Dermaplaning with other anti-aging procedures, you will receive optimum and longer lasting results in rejuvenated skin.
