Exfoliation is a classic skin care remedy that can do wonders for skin but that is also overlooked. Consider it like that perfect pair of shoes that completes an outfit, or the always in style LBD (aka: little black dress). Exfoliation removes the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving skin brighter while simultaneously improving the penetration of any creams and or serums that may be applied afterwards. But are you exfoliating the right way? As it turns out, not every type of exfoliation is right for everyone, and like with most skincare treatments, knowing whether you are properly exfoliating is determined by considering your skin type.
NORMAL SKIN: Normal skin is not too oily, nor too dry. This type of skin can handle a stronger type of exfoliation, like Image’s Skincare line of Clinical Peels, which contain some form of glycolic and salicylic acid.
DRY SKIN: Dry skin that is not super sensitive can handle a lactic acid peel, since it’s more hydrating than glycolic acid.
OILY, ACNE PRONE SKIN: Salicylic acid and mechanical exfoliants like face scrubs are a great option here, since the acid can break through the oil barrier of the skin while the exfoliants open up the pores to remove bacteria.
SENSITIVE SKIN: Sensitive skin tends to be prone to broken capillaries or rosacea and should be handled more gently when it comes to exfoliation. People with this skin type should avoid strong peels or scrubs and opt for a gentler exfoliation method instead, like Image’s Skincare new range of Designer Peels, which fully customizable for the individual client’s needs.
EXFOLIATION GUIDELINES FOR ALL SKIN TYPES
Now that you know the right exfoliation method for your skin type, here are some general exfoliation guidelines to follow:
1) Exfoliate no more than 2-3 times per week, on alternating days.
2) Tone it down if your skin turns very red or starts to discolor
This is a sign that your skin may not be quite ready for such aggressive exfoliation.
3) Follow up your exfoliation with serums and/or moisturizers.
Look for creams and serums that contain hyluronic acid, which will help your skin lock in moisture.
4) Don’t forget to wear sunscreen!
Exfoliating removes the protective layer of your skin, so make sure you protect the new layer of skin from the sun.
