Santa may be just around the corner with his sleigh filled with gifts to give to your loved ones, but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook! With the holidays comes that nagging question: What will I get ____ (insert your loved one’s name(s) here)____ this Christmas? And sure, while a pair of socks will do the trick, do they really say “I know you better than you know yourself and here’s what you really need this holiday season?” I argue that it does not. So here are some tips on how to gift like Santa Claus himself this holiday season:

1. Know Your Gift Receiver

This may involve some research, some double 07 agent trickery, but find out what your loved one’s hobbies, interests, and lifelong dreams are. You’re bound to discover an activity your gift receiver enjoys doing. Once you do, use this knowledge for all its worth and be the best gift giver they’ve ever seen by giving them a gift that you KNOW they’ll enjoy.

2. Get Organized

People make lists for a reason besides OCD. It’s time to get organized. Collect the names of your gift receivers and next to them, write down what you found out are activities/things they enjoy doing. Don’t limit yourself to one or two activities, jot down all the information you discovered. Then, look at the list- if Mary, for example, enjoys bubble baths, next to her activity write down gifts that she should enjoy based on that information, ie: relaxing music, candles, bath salts, a claw foot tub, one of those fancy wooden back scratcher things… The options are endless! Go crazy.

3. Give a gift that shows your appreciation for the gift receiver

You’ve done your research and you now know what your gift receiver NEEDS to receive this holiday season. Is your mom stressed out with the holidays or the fact that you’re still single at age 32? Worry not. Give her a spa day and show her that although you’re still single, she no longer needs to be stressed out about it! Giving a loved one something that says “I can’t change right now but I can pamper you”  just screams appreciation for our concerned mothers, does it not? Plus, I bet she’ll forget all about the fact that you’re single and she doesn’t have any grandkids yet while she’s getting her worries massaged away. You’re welcome.

4. Give the gift of double pleasure

Sure, one gift receiver is nice, but if you can get in on the action and gift something that you and your loved one can enjoy together, that’s double brownie points for you! Just don’t forget that the gift is primarily about THEM- So no, you cannot take your mother to that NASCAR race because you enjoy it so much and you’re convinced that she’ll love it just as much once she experiences it. Now is not the time to be selfish. See points 1 and 3 above.

5. Plan ahead

Buy your gifts a few weeks or days before the occasion. Organization again is everything, so don’t wait until the last minute to buy your gifts! And once you’ve found the perfect gift, don’t forget to wrap it nicely. This is the part where you can throw your personality into the mix by including a nice card or even customizing the gift wrapping.
