At the end of January, Dr. Oz talked on his show about a number of beauty industry secrets and how to outsmart them. One particularly important secret revealed is that the SPF Makeup (foundation and powders) offers less protection from the sun than you think!
The reason for this is actually quite logical: when you apply foundation or powder to your face, you’re not putting on the same coverage you would normally get from a sunscreen. While a sunscreen creates an important barrier from the sun’s UV rays that damage skin, makeup is only applied in spots, and often not in a quantity enough to give you, say, that advertised 30 SPF on the bottle. This results in what cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski calls a “leaky protection, like a chain link fence.”
The solution to this problem is very simple: use a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF first, then put your makeup on top of that!
We recommend Image’s Skincare Prevention Plus Tinted 30 SPF Moisturizer ($35), a 3-in-1 magic product that serves as moisturizer and SPF while giving your skin lightweight coverage for daily use. It is unbelievably flattering to all skin tones (trust us, we all here use it and have very different skin tones).
