Roses are red, violets are blue, Valentine’s day is almost here, how about learning some random facts to impress everyone you know? We know you are quite the social butterfly! We also know that we are terrible poets, but hey, we create magic with our treatments, not so much our words #nooneisperfect. So let’s get to it: Why do we even celebrate Valentine’s Day? And what’s with all the exchange of cards? Bet you still miss getting all those fun little vday cards in middle school, am I right?!

Well folks, turns out that the origin of Valentine’s Day is a bit unclear (so much for “decoding”) but many sources believe that it stems from the story of Saint Valentine, a Roman priest who was martyred on or around February 14 in the year 270 CE. And how did he become the patron saint of lovers, you ask? Well, that also remains a mystery (I promise we’ll get somewhere soon!) but one theory is that the church used the day of St. Valentine’s martyrdom to Christianize the old Roman Lupercalia, a pagan festival held around the middle of February. This festival included a ceremony where girls’ names were put in a box which boys would then later draw out. As a result, the newly formed couples would be paired off until the next year’s festival. As you can probably imagine, this drawing led the way to the custom of sending anonymous cards or messages to those whom one admired as a way of celebrating Valentine’s Day. In the mid-19th Century, early versions of fancy-schmancy Valentine cards fashioned of satin and lace and ornamented with flowers, ribbons, and images of cupids or birds appeared in England. Today, V-day continues to be a day for the exchange of cards, in addition to candy, gifts, or flowers to one’s “valentine.” It is a day full of romance and cheesy hallmark cards, even if it did start out as just another pagan festival.
