Your Skin Has a Night Shift: Why Your Nighttime Routine Matters
Your skin doesn’t clock out when you do.
At the end of a long day, washing your face can feel like one more thing standing between you and bed.
We get it.
But nighttime is actually a great opportunity to give your skin a little attention. During the day, your skin is dealing with sun exposure, makeup, sunscreen, sweat, pollution, dry Colorado air, and whatever else the day throws at it.
At night, the job gets simpler.
A good nighttime skincare routine helps remove the day, support your skin barrier, and gives you a chance to use targeted products based on what your skin actually needs.
And no, you do not need 12 steps.
Why Does Your Nighttime Skincare Routine Matter?
Your skin follows a natural daily rhythm, and nighttime is an important period for normal skin repair and renewal.
That doesn’t mean your skin magically transforms at midnight. It does mean that your evening routine is a good time to cleanse away what has accumulated during the day and use products that support your skin while you’re sleeping.
The important part is not how many products you use.
It’s choosing the right ones and actually using them consistently.
What Should Your Nighttime Skincare Routine Include?
For most people, a good nighttime skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated. Start with three things:
- Take the Day Off
Makeup, sunscreen, oil, sweat, and everyday buildup all end up on your skin. A nighttime cleanse removes that layer and gives whatever you’re using next a clean place to start. If you wear heavier makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, your provider may recommend a double cleanse. If you don’t, one good cleanser may be plenty. The goal is clean skin, not skin that feels like you’ve scrubbed it into submission. - Treat What You Actually Want to Treat
This is where nighttime skincare can get confusing fast.Retinoids. Acids. Peptides. Brighteners. Growth factors. Serums with ingredient lists that require Google. You probably don’t need all of them.Your treatment step should be based on your skin and your goals. Depending on what you’re working on, that might include:- Fine lines and texture
- Pigmentation and uneven tone
- Dryness and dehydration
- Acne or congestion
- Overall skin quality
More isn’t necessarily better here. Combining too many active ingredients can leave your skin irritated instead of improved.
If you’re not sure what belongs in your routine, ask us. We’d much rather help you choose two products you’ll actually use than send you home with seven bottles you’re afraid to combine.
- Don’t Forget Moisture
A good nighttime moisturizer helps support your skin’s moisture barrier and reduce water loss while you sleep. What that moisturizer looks like depends on your skin. Some people need something lightweight. Others, especially during a dry Colorado fall and winter, may do better with something richer. This is also where seasonal changes can matter. The moisturizer that felt perfect in July may suddenly feel like it’s doing absolutely nothing in October.Your skin is allowed to change its mind.
What About Retinol and Other Nighttime Actives?
Some ingredients are especially well suited to an evening routine. Retinoids are probably the best-known example.
They can be incredibly useful for concerns like texture, fine lines, acne, and pigmentation, but they’re also a good example of why stronger isn’t always better.
How often you use an active ingredient, what you pair it with, and how your skin tolerates it all matter.
If your face is red, flaky, tight, and angry every morning, that’s not proof your skincare is “working.”
It may be proof that it’s time to rethink the routine.
Do You Really Need a Separate Morning and Night Routine?
Not an entirely different bathroom cabinet, no.
But your morning and evening routines have different priorities.
In the morning, one of the biggest priorities is protection, especially sunscreen.
At night, you can focus more on cleansing, targeted treatment, and moisture.
There can be plenty of overlap between the products you use in both routines. The goal isn’t to double the number of things you own.
It’s to use what you have at the right time.
What About a Night Cream?
A night cream can be a simple way to add targeted skincare and moisture to your evening routine without adding five more steps.
Our Barris Night Renewal Cream was created specifically for nighttime use, making it an easy addition to a simple Cleanse → Treat → Moisturize routine.

Make Your Nighttime Routine Work for You
The best nighttime skincare routine is one that makes sense for your skin and is realistic enough to become a habit.
Cleanse. Treat. Moisturize.
Use the products that have a reason to be there. Give your skin the moisture it needs.
Then go to bed.
Your skincare routine does not need its own zip code.
